D7 Visa
The D7 visa is aimed at people who count with a passive income and, despite often being called a retirement visa, it covers many other situations and types of income. In addition to the retired, this visa can also be obtained by, for example, pensioners, income holders originating from renting, copywriting, financial applications and profits and shares from companies, amongst others. Even Ministers of religion or those who practice, professionally, a religious activity or that are members of an institute of consecrated life can obtain this Visa.
On obtaining this Visa you will be able to request the authorisation of residence and, consequently, study, work and live in Portugal. Your direct family member will also have the right to request the family reunification to be able to join you. In addition, after 5 years of residing legally in Portugal, if you are eligible, you will be able to request Portuguese citizenship by time of residence.
How to apply for a D7 visa?
The first step to requesting the D7 visa is getting all documents and forms required ready. Amongst these documents are: Identification documents, income statements, criminal records, proof of residence, tax payment invoices and all other pirces of evidence needed to prove that you meet all the requirements.
It will also be required to provide a bank account in Portugal and proof of minimum income. Regarding the minimum income, there is a stipulated value per month according to the minimum wage in Portugal and this value varies according to the number of direct family members that will be joining you. You can obtain proof of income through invoices of your pension deposits and/or of your investments’ profits. The more evidence you provide the higher your chances of having your visa approved will be.
After providing all the required documents, the next step is to apply for the visa at the processing center of the application country. In Brasil, the application center of official visa for the Portuguese Government is the VFS Global. To do this, you can deliver your application and documents via mail or by booking an appointment to deliver them in hand at the VFS Global with jurisdiction over the are you reside in. Make sure all the documents are complete and properly filled in and organised since incomplete processes will not be accepted.
Once the application has been put forward, you will be able to follow the status of the application review at the VFS Global or the relevant entity in your country of residence. Once a decision has been made by the consulate or embassy, you will receive an email with the resolution of the application review and you will be able to retrieve your passport at the visa application centre or this will be sent back to you by mail.
Finally, arriving in Portugal, to officially become a resident of the country you will need to request your residence authorization at the SEF (Foreign and Borders Service) where you will hand in your documents and go through a personal interview. This residence authorisation can be renewed periodically and, after 5 years of legal residence in Portugal, if eligible, you will be able to request the Portuguese citizenship and become a lawful beneficiary of all Portuguese citizen’s rights.
