Portuguese Citizen Card
The Portuguese Citizen Card is an identification document that is valid in all European Union countries. It is mandatory for Portuguese citizens and optional for Brazilians.
Brazilians can obtain the citizen card thanks to the Porto Seguro Treaty signed on April 22, 2000. This agreement gives rights to Brazilian immigrants in Portugal, one of which is access to the Portuguese citizen card, provided they apply for the Equal Rights Statute and Duties and hold a valid residence permit.
The citizen card contains important information about the individual, such as the civil identity or NIF (Tax Identification Number) which is equivalent to the CPF in Brazil, the NISS (Social Security Identification Number), the National Health System registration number and electoral register, if any.
In addition, it has a chip that allows identification and digital signature in any public or private entity, making authentication easier and safer.
Another advantage of using the citizen card is that it is possible to access the Portal of the National Health System or use the application to schedule appointments and health check-ups without leaving home. In addition, it allows you to compete for certain scholarships, request a reduction in tuition and pay the same amount as national students and even compete for public tenders in Portugal, if you meet the vacancy requirements.
